Feng Shui For Organizations
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art and in its most simplistic form, it is actually the art of placement. The definition of Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Shway) is Wind and Water. This 5000 year old philosophy has finally come to the United States and it is spreading across all ages. I know this personally because I have been in many homes and businesses throughout the country. Generally, if the family is practicing Feng Shui in the office, they are also practicing the same at home.
The technique that practitioners use is to surround themselves with “auspicious” chi energy. They do this by looking at their surroundings with a discriminating eye. You have been in these surroundings many times, there just isn’t a sign in the workplace or home that Feng Shui techniques have been used to create a balanced work or home area.
Picture yourself walking into an office to meet with an advertising professional that you would like to partner with in creating a new company. You walk into the building and it is non-descript and the signage on the new door is a simple sign… In my practitioner eye, I am already evaluating the area around the door. I knock on the door and I hear a loud noise as if something has crashed to the floor.
Externally, the building wasn’t one that I would choose for a successful business and the internal loud noise set me off guard. The offensive noise was “clutter” that he knocked off of his desk in his haste to answer the door. His desk had so many items on it that I could barely speak to him about the potential of a business partnership. What are the chances of him and I being in a partnership together?
The most basic Feng Shui rules are to remain clutter free in your surroundings. Clutter is piles of unread books, piles of paper, and stacks of files sitting on the hard drive. If you have not cleaned your files in years in your office, you have created “shar” energy. Shar energy is the word used for “bad” chi energy. The area is stagnant and you have not left enough space in the files to allow new business to come to you. Symbolically, you have placed a stop sign on your office door and you are not allowing any new business to come into your life.
Your office should be as streamlined as possible to create a natural balance. This balance is what can make you or break you during those stressful moments of working on a project. Your desk should be positioned facing the door way. Your phone should be in a position of easy access, preferably on the right side of your desk, and your files should be easy to reach from your desk. Most of us are working 40 hours or more a week and we need to be as comfortable as possible. Look at the pictures on your wall and analyze them for a moment. What would others think of these same pictures?
Garage Organization – A Laundry Room in the Garage, Could Save You Thousands!
“Honey, you need to come home, we have a major problem.” What can be worse when you answer your phone? It just recently happened to me. My wife called me at work and said “Honey, you need to come home, we have a major problem.” Of course your mind races and you automatically expect the worst. Are the kids ok? Are you ok? Did you get into an accident, is anyone hurt? Then I hear, “No dear, it’s the house.” Did it burn down, earthquake, electrical, what happened? “The house, it’s flooded.” Well, it could be worse, but for homeowners, plumbing issues are right up there with the last thing you have to deal with. In my case my wife proceeds to tell me that when she got home and opened the garage door a wall of water came out. I triaged the situation with her over the phone and found out the water leakage was coming from a broken hot water hose to the washing machine. I quickly told her to simply shut off the water line to the washer and the gusher of water stopped. Then I stayed on the phone with her as she walked around the house and throughout the interior. Of course, I expected the worst. On the other side of the wall where the water line burst is our den with beautiful oak hardwood floors throughout. As I stayed on the line she surveyed the situation, to our amazement, the problem was just in the garage.
Good fortune #1. I came home later that day and I was able to replace the hose, I replaced both the hot and cold just in case. In about an hour and $20 later the problem was fixed. However now I had to deal with the damage in the garage.
Good fortune #2; I recently organized my garage with new interlocking tiles, a slatwall organization system on the walls to hang everything on, including all new resin cabinets. So there literally was no damage. I simply squeegee-ed the water out the front of the garage and that was it. The interlocking tiles I installed on the garage are designed to allow for airflow underneath the tiles and the remaining water quickly dried. Because I had slatwall installed on walls, no items were on the floor and thus no water damage to my personal items, tools, etc. Because my cabinets were built of a commercial grade plastic or resin, none of my cabinets had water damage, as would have been the case with wooden cabinets. Also, none of the items within the cabinets were ruined, because they were hanging on the wall off the floor. So what could have been a major multi-thousand dollar disaster, literally was fixed, cleaned and back to normal within a couple hours and $20. Amazing! The investment I had made to organize my garage just saved me thousands of dollars in time and money. Now that was a great investment.
Good fortune #3. About six months earlier our house featured on the HGTV show, “How Much is My House Worth”. On this show the basically give you a market appraisal and tell what is good about you house and what is bad. Overall I was very pleased with the results. However one item my house was graded down on, was having the washer and dryer in the garage. The TV host said, “in this day and age, people don’t want t have to go into the garage to do the laundry.” “Most new houses have laundry room built into the house. And in models that are two story, they have the laundry room on the second floor to save time from going up and down the stairs.” I never forgot that statement. Unfortunately, shy of a $50,000+ major remodel of my house, the washer and dryer was going to stay where it was. I couldn’t justify that type of investment on a resale. However, I look back now, after the infamous phone call from my wife and thought how lucky I was. If the washer and dryer would have been in the house, this would have been a major disaster. The hardwood floors and the carpet would have been ruined. The walls, the insulation, my furniture and possible mold issues, I could just hear the cash register ringing continuously. Not to mention the time it would have taken to fix it and the impact on our family having to be displaced while the repairs were taken care of. I actually thought about calling the TV show and the host to tell them of my experience and how my down graded washer and dryer in the garage saved me thousands. But I didn’t. Instead I smiled and was thankful that everything turned out the way it did…this time.
The moral of the story, check your washer water hoses regularly and replace them sooner rather than later. Having your washer and dryer in the garage is not a bad thing, while it might not be the most convenient place fr your washer and dryer, it could save you thousands in the long run. And finally, organize your garage!

The organization of a closet normally depends on the closet space that you readily have. Maximize your closet space by using these closet organization systems materials: shelves, hanging rods, drawers and many others – it is up to you to discover the other accessories which you could use. In this article, we are going to discuss about shelves, hanging rods, and drawers by detail.
Hanging Rods
Hanging rods are not just those long bars that you see hanging in the closet. They can be more versatile as one could imagine. To maximize your closet space, you could either install a second hanging rod, or install a hanging rod that only goes across half of your closet. The first option would work best if you have many clothes that need hanging. On the other hand, the second option would be ideal for those who would like to put additional shelves and drawers inside their closet.
Shelves
Shelves also make very useful closet organization systems because they can house a lot of items without having to consume much of the space. Plus, if the things put on these shelves are properly arranged, it could help lengthen the life of materials you put there – books will be preserved, and other materials will be protected from damage.
You could use simple dividers to make shelves out of your closet. If you you’ve ever experienced your stuff toppling over, or wasting your energy trying to find what you need from a pile of those things inside your closet, maybe it’s about time to have multiple shelves and save yourself from experiencing those agonies, again. You can choose the size of your shelves, depending on your need for space and your preferences in closet organization. It would be best to opt for those shelves that could be easily adjusted to make any necessary changes later on without much difficulty.
