Going Green Is Good for Business
More and more businesses around the globe are realizing the value of ‘going green’ and working within the guidelines of environmental management services through the employing of environmental consultants. In fact a survey conducted in the United Kingdom of companies that have a turnover of between £50m and £500m has proven to be a proverbial shot in the arm for the environment movement as a whole which did not fare too well over the past year. The survey followed on the heels of a report that was carried out for the United Nations in June of this year that indicated that 93% of the top chief executives in the world actually see sustainability as vital to the future success of their companies.
According to James Goodman who is a senior adviser at Forum for the Future sustainability has moved from merely a PR exercise 5 – 10 years ago into the boardrooms of the world as more companies see it as commercially imperative to the success of their businesses. Working with environmental consultants is essential to ensure that a business complies with laws and regulations governing environmental issues and impact.
It would be naïve to assume that making a sincere and lasting commitment to the environment is a cheap or inexpensive undertaking for any business. Yet despite this there are companies these days who not only realize but understand that compliance with environmental management services and working with environmental consultants for the purpose of going green can and does improve their bottom-line. Know the Difference Between Responsible and Accountable
Being responsible is not enough to make you a competent leader. For you to climb the corporate ladder, you must be accountable. In other words, you discontinue making excuses for work that goes undone, and control the temptation to point fingers when the work fails to meet expectations. The bottom line is that those with a “C” title understand that the buck stops with them.
Everyone can be Responsible
A job description makes you responsible for the work assigned to you. You are required to greet customers when they enter the store. You are informed by your that you should handle 10 accounts receivable transactions by Friday. As the HR Generalist, you are tasked with updating the sick leave policy. As an insurance salesperson, you have to make your 36 dials today. These are all situations where you are responsible. In most cases, you are responsible for day-to-day activities that are largely in your comfort zone.
To be a good employee, you must be responsible. In other words, your direct counts on you to do the work you were hired to do. However, climbing the rungs of the corporate ladder require more than responsibility. Read the rest of this entry »
When Business Models Fail Us
As a franchisor, I truly believe that a strong business model is paramount, and yet, I’ve always been concerned with business models which don’t deliver on their promise and treat their customers as money sources to exploit to the maximum possible. It’s just wrong, and such short-term thinking deserves its just reward, and when “what goes around, comes around,” and it will, that’s when I say; “it’s poetic justice!” Okay so, let’s start this dialogue with some examples shall we, because, I’d like to discuss my observations over the years if I may.
Before retirement, I was in the car washing business and I can recall the industry Association, the trade publications, and even some of the top players in the industry had recommended that all the carwashes in the country concentrate on making the maximum number of dollars per vehicle which came in. They advocated trickery in sales tactics, pushy up-selling, and all sorts of other techniques to raise the amount of money made per car or per customer. This always bothered me, and I always went for a low cost, high-volume strategy, giving the customer what they wanted and counted on the repeat business.
Over the years, it turns out that I was correct, and the industry was wrong. It was especially evident as we went into a recession year, and this was back in the early 90s. But it wasn’t just the car washing sector, I saw the same thing in the oil change business model. Major chains of oil change, and quick lube facilities had also advocated major up-selling, rewarding their salesmen when a lady came in for a standard oil change with a coupon that she received in the mail and then selling her a radiator flush, a transmission fluid flush, and all sorts of other very expensive things, continually telling her that if she didn’t change these things it would cost her more in very expensive repairs later. Time For A Leadership Ethics Check
Now may be the time, in the midst of an economic recovery, that companies stop to take a good hard look at their ethics initiatives. Many companies have started to notice that being ethical and acting ethical is a vital and integral component to business success, especially in this economic climate.
If your code of ethics is five years old or even older, it is time to reevaluate and review it in detail. Now I’m not referring to your code of conduct. A code of conduct is a compliance document and is not really considered a code of ethics.
A code of ethics should be designed to focus on what is acceptable or not acceptable, what is negotiable and what is not negotiable. The terms of “right” and “wrong” can at times be too subjective and absolute.
A code of ethics is like the rules of a game. If I come to your house to play a game, shouldn’t you explain the rules before we play? And what if you change the rules in the middle of the game? What happens to your credibility? What happens to the credibility of the game? Your business deserves a code of ethics so everyone in the company plays by the same rules.
Let me share with you a short series of questions to help you reflect on your company’s ethics initiative and where you may need some help or work.
Do you have a code of ethics? If not, why not? If so, do all employees have a copy of it? Does the company provide ongoing ethics training to reinforce the code? Is your current format working? Read the rest of this entry »
